While I was down in Melbourne last December, I checked out Miso’s exhibition ‘Tchusse’ at the Gorker Gallery, not-so-coincidentally located on the corner of Gore St & Kerr St in Fitzroy, Melbourne. The exhibition is the essence of her home city Kharkov, Ukraine condensed into a single room, complete with paper building structures, clotheslines of tea-stained fabric and illustrated portraits of strangers, friends and family folk.
Miso works across a range of mediums, from pasting street art across the urban walls of Melbourne to delicate pencil illustrations on paper, to embroidered tea towels, to three-dimensional papercuts, to the most recent addition, a new collection of clothing bearing her handiwork. For more insight into the world of Miso, have a peek at her flickr too.
The Curvy Annual showcases the top 100 female illustrators and artists from over 40 different countries. This year they had 1600 submissions and they culled it down to the top 120 female artists. Every year Curvy publishes a limited edition book and an amazing exhibition of work that tours nationally around Australia. This year the exhibition launch was at the Mori Gallery, Sydney on the 2nd April 2009. I went down for the launch as I was fortunate enough to be a part of this year’s top 120 female artists. Look out for the 2009 Annual [Issue #6] — every Curvy issue is packed full of inspiration and amazing creative talent. You can also purchase previous editions here.

Semi-Permanent is one of the coolest ‘creative industry’ conferences to hit Brisbane. The one day conference showcases the work of various creative industries both locally and internationally from design, to photojournalism, to publishing, animation, contemporary art and motion graphics. The speakers this year were amazing and incredibly inspiring. One of my favourite speakers was Timba Smits. He’s the Melbourne-based creative prodigy behind Wooden Toy Quarterly. Absolute legend.
